UK via AU's Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi (FFO dark, atmospheric) Announces Album on Ba Da Bing! Records 11/14

Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi’s debut album, Undertow, is scheduled to be out on November 14th on Ba Da Bing! Records is an intimate and emotionally raw exploration of trauma, healing, and feminine vulnerability. With voice and cello at its core, the album balances cinematic intensity with stark minimalism, drawing listeners into stories of memory, violation, and trust. The first single, “Crying in Pastel,” is a haunting meditation on grief and anger, driven by spiraling harp, steady bass, and Hansen-Knarhoi’s gritty, aching vocals. Her lyrics cut to the bone, unflinchingly confronting the psyche of predatory behavior while grasping at the hope for connection. This work, informed by the fallout of violence against women, transforms pain into poetic, visceral sound.

Born in the stark landscapes of Western Australia, Hansen-Knarhoi’s relationship with nature deeply informs her sound—both through field recordings and compositional atmosphere. Starting as a young poet, she developed a storytelling voice rooted in solitude and melody, later evolving into a folk tradition defined by oral transmission and emotional weight. Her 2023 EP Wildflowers examined the passage from childhood to adulthood, while Undertow pushes further into abstract sonic territory, thanks in part to Brooklyn producer Randall Dunn. Hansen-Knarhoi emphasizes the tactile nature of music—how sound emerges from touch, breath, and bodily experience. Drawing from theatre, dance, and film, her performances blur the line between song and sensation, grounding ambient folk textures in minimalist soundscapes and deeply personal storytelling. At its core, Undertow is both a reckoning and a reaching—seeking truth, healing, and human connection.
